Autumn in Yin Yoga Practice!

Updated: Jul 3, 2023

I would like to start my presentation with one of my favourite autumn quote :

"And all the lives we ever lived and all the lives to be are full of trees and changing leaves..."by Virginia Woolf

Metal Elements

The METAL element is associated with the meridian system of the Lungs and Large Intestine organs. In our body, these meridians are located at the arms. When we practice Yin Yoga we can use poses that create stress in the outer arm to target the large intestine or the inner arm to target the lungs.

Yoga works with different tissue groups, so it shouldn’t feel the same as a Yang class like Vinyasa or Power Yoga . When you find your edge — where it would feel about right to stop in a more active pose. It can be hard to get used to, but with a regular Yin practice, you’ll start noticing the difference in your Yang practice, too. You should never feel in pain or tingly.

In traditional Chinese medicine autumn is connected to the element of metal and to meridians of the lung and the large intestine, which mostly run along the hands, arms, the front of shoulders and neck and beside the nose.

Move through each posture, holding as long as you like. A good starting place is somewhere between 3-5 minutes per asana.

Symptoms of Large Intestine Hand Yangming Meridian

Sinusitis, epistaxis, toothache, red, painful eyes and throat, facial paralysis, rashes, itching and hyperpigmentation.

You might be surprised to know that, oddly enough, the large intestine meridian does not travel over the region of the body where the colon is physically located. Instead, it begins at the hands and ends along the face, allowing licensed acupuncturists to influence the functioning and qi (energy) of this organ from afar.

This meridian begins at the lower corner of the nail-bed on the radial side of the index finger (the side closest to the thumb). Next it flows between the bones of the first and second fingers, ascending along the lateral aspect of the forearm to the outermost crease of the elbow. It continues along the outside of the upper arm to the depression found at the shoulder joint before tracing the back of the shoulder blade to emerge at a point alongside the neck. The meridian then passes through the cheeks and enters the lower gums, tracing upwards along the side of the lips until it reaches its intentionally named exit point “open fragrance,” which lies next to the nostrils in the groove that become one’s smile or “laugh” lines.

What are the benefits of broken wings Yin Yoga?

Stretches, Strengthens, Lengthens: Seated Broken Wings Pose stretches the groin muscles moderately. It stretches the back of the wrist, shoulders and the upper back. The deep stretch at the back of the wrists strengthens the ligaments and the fine tissues in this area.
